HOW THE METHOD WORKS
---------------------

Engrave follows three phases. They are not optional stages you can skip past;
each one is what makes the next one work.

Phase one — read the passage aloud fifty times, three or four times a day. You
are not memorizing yet. You are letting the words become familiar.

Phase two — one verse a day, with cumulative review. Each day you recite
everything you have learned so far from the reference alone, then learn one new
verse. Engrave holds the new verse back until the review is done, because the
review is the part that works and the part people skip.

Phase three — once the last verse is learned, recite the whole passage once a
day for two or three weeks. This is what turns something you can just about
remember into something you still have in a year.


COMMON QUESTIONS

I cannot add a passage. It says it could not reach the internet.
  Adding a passage downloads its text, so it needs a connection. Everything
  after that works offline. If you are connected and it still fails, tell us
  the passage and translation you were trying to add.

Why can't I add another ESV passage?
  Crossway licenses the ESV to apps on the condition that no more than 500
  verses, or one half of any single book, is stored at a time. Engrave enforces
  that limit and will tell you which one you have reached. Finishing or
  removing a passage frees the allowance again. The other translations have
  their own, more generous limits.

Can I use Engrave without a connection?
  Yes, apart from adding a new passage. Your verses, your reviews and your
  progress all live on your device.

What do my friends see?
  Your display name, which passage you are working on, which phase you are in,
  how far along you are, and your streak. They never see your verses or your
  notes. Group members see the same.

How do I stop the reminders?
  Profile > Reminders. You can turn them off entirely there.

I missed a day and lost my streak.
  Streaks are a small line on the home screen, not the point of the app. The
  method works because of the cumulative review, and picking it up again
  tomorrow costs you nothing but the day.

How do I delete my account?
  Profile > Account > Delete account. It is immediate and permanent, and it
  removes everything: your passages, your progress, your friendships and the
  copy stored on your device. We cannot undo it, so write down what you have
  memorized first if you want a record.
